Hawaii Cruise Guide: Four Islands, No Passport Needed

Overview

Hawaii is the one major cruise destination where the itinerary structure matters more than the ship. There are effectively two products, and they are so different that comparing their fares is meaningless.

The first is Norwegian's Pride of America, a US-flagged ship that sails seven-night round-trips from Honolulu calling at Maui, the Big Island and Kauai, with overnight stays and no sea days. It is the only way to see four islands by sea in a week, and because it is US-flagged it is not required to call at a foreign port.

The second is a round-trip from Los Angeles, San Diego or Vancouver, typically 14 to 18 nights, with five sea days in each direction and four or five island days in the middle. These sailings are cheaper per night and far longer, and the sea days are genuinely open-ocean Pacific days.

Hawaii sits about 2,400 miles from the US West Coast, which is why any round-trip from the mainland requires five sea days each way. There is no way around this; it is simply how far away the islands are.

US cabotage law, specifically the Passenger Vessel Services Act, requires foreign-flagged ships sailing between two US ports to call at a foreign port. This is why mainland round-trips almost always include Ensenada, and why Pride of America, as the only large US-flagged cruise ship, is uniquely able to run pure inter-island itineraries.

The islands themselves are different enough that treating them as interchangeable is a mistake. Maui is the resort island, the Big Island has active volcanism and the best stargazing, Kauai is the most scenic and the wettest, and Oahu holds Honolulu, Pearl Harbor and most of the state's population.

The best time to go

Hawaii has no bad month, which is unusual. Temperatures vary by about six degrees across the year and the ocean stays between 75 and 80 Fahrenheit.

The variables are rain, which peaks November through March on windward coasts, and price, which peaks in the Christmas period and mid-summer.

The ports, honestly assessed

Hawaii is the destination where renting a car pays off most clearly. Ship excursions in Maui and the Big Island are expensive and rigid, and the islands are easy to drive.

  Pearl Harbor is the essential visit and books out months ahead. Waikiki is a 15-minute taxi. The Pali Highway drive is free and spectacular.

  Rent a car. The Road to Hana needs a full day; Haleakala sunrise needs a reservation booked 60 days out.

  The wet side. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is 45 minutes and is the single best port excursion in the state.

  A tender port on the dry side. Coffee farms, Kealakekua Bay snorkelling and the best manta ray night dive in the world.

• Nawiliwili, KauaiUnited States

  Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali coast. A helicopter tour is expensive at $300 to $400 and is the one worth taking.

  Historically a tender port; check current status before booking, as calls have been suspended and altered since the 2023 wildfire.

  The technical foreign call required on mainland round-trips. A short stop, usually under six hours.

Weather, month by month

Hawaii's weather is defined by elevation and aspect rather than by season. The windward, northeastern side of each island is wet; the leeward, southwestern side is dry. A single island can have both a rainforest and a desert.

What it actually costs

Hawaii is the most expensive US cruise destination per night, and the two itinerary types cost very differently. Pride of America is expensive per night but short. A mainland round-trip is cheaper per night but 14 to 18 nights long.

Flights matter enormously here. A round-trip from the East Coast to Honolulu runs $650 to $1,100, which is often more than the difference between the two itinerary types.

Travel tips from our sailings

  Rent a car in Kahului and Hilo. The islands are easy to drive, the ship excursions are expensive and rigid, and a rental costs $60 to $110 a day.

  Book Pearl Harbor tickets the moment they release, 60 days ahead. Ship excursions are the fallback when the free tickets have gone.

  Haleakala sunrise on Maui requires a National Park Service reservation booked exactly 60 days in advance and sells out in minutes.

  Kona is a tender port and tendering is cancelled several times a season in swell. Do not build the trip around a Kona-only activity.

• A rain shell, because windward coasts get brief heavy showers in every month.
• Proper walking shoes for lava fields in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which shreds soft soles.
• A warm layer for Haleakala summit, where sunrise temperatures reach the mid-thirties Fahrenheit.
• Reef-safe sunscreen; Hawaii bans oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens by state law.
• A snorkel mask if you have one you like; rentals are widely available but variable.
• Binoculars for whale watching between December and April.
