Holland America has been operating since 1873 and it has not felt the need to reinvent itself. The ships are mid-size, the public rooms are wood-panelled rather than neon, dinner is a proper occasion, and the entertainment is live music rather than aerial acrobatics. If that reads as dated to you, this is not your line. If it reads as a relief, it very much is.
The itineraries are the substance. Holland America runs longer and more interesting routes than almost anyone at this price: 14-night Panama Canal full transits, 21-night South Pacific crossings, Alaska cruisetours to Denali on its own rail cars and, in Rotterdam's case, an annual Grand Voyage.

The fleet
The fleet splits into Pinnacle class, the newest at around 2,650 guests; Signature and Vista class from the 2000s at 1,900 to 2,100 guests; and the small, ageing R class ships used for the longest voyages.
The Pinnacle ships, Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam, are the ones to book. They keep the classic Holland America feel while adding the Music Walk entertainment complex and much better cabins.

Nothing else at sea comes close for live music breadth and quality. Rivals spend their entertainment budget on one big theatre; Holland America spread it across four rooms.
